Abstract
Measurements of the ESCA spectrum and the electrode capacitance of a nickel electrode under various charge/discharge conditions were carried out in order to clarify the charge/discharge reaction mechanism of the nickel electrode. The electrode capacitance increased with the charging, and the progress and values showed the maximum in the charge completion. Then, the electrode capacitance rapidly decreased with the discharging process of the nickel electrode. The charge/discharge reaction was examined from the view points of these findings and the measured ESCA spectrum of the nickel electrodes under various charge/discharge conditions. The invasion and desorption of oxygen and potassium to the nickel hydroxide occurred by the charging and discharging processes of the nickel electrodes, respectively. It was estimated that the charge/discharge reaction of the nickel electrode proceeded with the ionic intercalation and deintercalation of anions such as KO2- or KO- to the nickel hydroxide.
